Rash on side of face: what should you know?

Notice whether the area is dry, scaly, ring-shaped, crusted, swollen, or made of small blisters. A rash beside the eye, ear, hairline, or mouth can be exposed to different triggers such as cosmetics, hair products, masks, phones, jewellery, or pillow fabrics. Atopic dermatitis can cause dry inflamed skin, while contact dermatitis can follow contact with an irritant or allergen. Ringworm may form an expanding scaly edge, and shingles-like blistering on one side needs prompt assessment.

The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it burns or itches, and whether anything new touched the skin. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams near the eye unless a healthcare professional has advised it. Photograph the rash in good light and note changes after products, heat, sun, or medicines.

Get urgent help for facial swelling with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, eye pain or vision change, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or blisters near the eye. Arrange a medical review if the rash is spreading, oozing, recurrent, or not settling after removing a suspected trigger.
