Rash in crease of arm: what should you know?

The inner elbow bends, traps warmth, and experiences friction from clothing and sweat. Atopic dermatitis often affects flexures with itch, dryness, and recurrent inflammation. Contact dermatitis may follow a new fabric, detergent, fragrance, or topical product. A moist fold can also become irritated or infected, while a ring-shaped scaly edge may point toward a fungal cause. A clinician uses the whole pattern, not location alone.

Wash gently, pat the fold dry, wear loose breathable sleeves, and pause newly introduced fragranced products. Apply a bland moisturizer to dry, unbroken skin. Keep nails short and try not to scratch, because broken skin is easier to infect. Avoid borrowing prescription creams or layering multiple treatments; some products can worsen an infection or hide its features.

Arrange same-day care for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, red streaks, severe pain, or swelling that limits arm movement. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Persistent recurrence or a rash that does not settle with gentle care should be examined.

Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, contact dermatitis, heat irritation, or infection; whether a swab or skin test is useful; and which moisturizer or medicine is appropriate for the crease.
