What should you know about rash caused by yeast infection?

Vaginal thrush involves an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Most people with this condition notice pronounced itching or burning, while the surrounding skin may become inflamed, tender, cracked, or irritated by scratching. A thick, pale discharge may occur, but not everyone has discharge.

Rash appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Contact dermatitis from soaps or pads, eczema, bacterial imbalance, and some sexually transmitted infections can resemble thrush. The timing, associated symptoms, and an examination help distinguish them.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, dry by patting, and avoid scented products, vaginal douches, deodorants, and unnecessary topical creams. Loose clothing and breathable underwear can reduce rubbing and trapped moisture. Keep fingernails short so scratching is less likely to damage the skin.

Ask a clinician or pharmacist about antifungal treatment for thrush, especially if symptoms are new, severe, recurrent, or occurring during pregnancy. Complete treatment as directed and do not use leftover medicine for a different-looking rash.

Seek assessment for blisters, ulcers, marked swelling, fever, lower abdominal pain, bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, or burning when urinating. Get urgent help for rapidly spreading swelling, faintness, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling after treatment.
