Hair Transplant: What to Know Beforehand

A clinician removes individual follicular units or a strip of hair-bearing skin, prepares grafts, and places them into planned recipient sites. The donor area must contain enough suitable follicles, and the design should account for future thinning. Male pattern hair loss and selected cases of female pattern hair loss may be considered. Scarring alopecia, active scalp disease, and some patchy causes need diagnosis and control before surgery. Transplanted hairs do not prevent native hairs from changing later.

Have the diagnosis confirmed and ask for an examination of both donor and recipient areas. Discuss the hairline design, graft source, anaesthesia, expected shedding during healing, washing instructions, activity restrictions, scar care, and how ongoing hair loss will be managed. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and disclose smoking, bleeding problems, allergies, and previous scalp procedures. PRP for hair loss or scalp micropigmentation may be alternatives or additions for some concerns, but they do not replace a suitable donor supply.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding, or a wound that opens. New patchy loss, severe swelling, or a sudden change in the donor area also deserves review. Follow the clinic’s aftercare instructions closely, because rubbing, picking, or early pressure can disturb healing grafts.
