The drink provides a known glucose load. A clinician may take a blood sample before it and at scheduled points afterwards. Comparing these results shows how efficiently glucose moves from the blood into the body’s tissues. The solution itself is part of the test, not a treatment for diabetes.

During pregnancy, this test may be used when screening for gestational diabetes. Feeling briefly nauseated, warm, light-headed, or tired can happen after drinking a concentrated solution, but tell the testing team if you feel unwell.

Follow the testing centre’s instructions about fasting, medicines, and arrival time. Bring something to occupy you because the test requires a waiting period and you may need to remain seated. Avoid eating, drinking anything outside the permitted instructions, smoking, or strenuous activity during the testing interval unless the team says otherwise.

Ask whether you should take regular medicines before the appointment. If you vomit or cannot finish the drink, tell staff immediately; the test may need to be stopped or rearranged.

Tell the testing team promptly about severe nausea, vomiting, faintness, sweating, shaking, confusion, or marked weakness during the appointment. Seek urgent medical help for collapse, difficulty breathing, or a new severe allergic-type reaction. Contact your maternity or diabetes team after the test if you remain unwell or cannot keep fluids down.
