Short answer

A rapid streptococcal antigen test uses a throat swab to look for streptococcal bacteria and help guide treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is the test?

A rapid streptococcal antigen test uses a throat swab to look for streptococcal bacteria and help guide treatment. A clinician rubs a swab over the tonsils and back of the throat. The sample is processed while you wait, although local testing arrangements vary. The test is usually considered when a sore throat has features that could fit streptococcal infection, rather than for every cough or cold.

What the result means

A positive result supports streptococcal throat infection, but a clinician still considers your examination and symptoms. A negative result makes streptococcal infection less likely, yet it may not explain the illness if another virus or condition is present. Some settings use a laboratory throat culture after a negative rapid result, particularly when symptoms and examination remain concerning. The test does not identify every cause of sore throat.

What to do next

Follow the plan given with your result. Antibiotics may be offered when bacterial infection is supported; they do not treat viral sore throats. Drink fluids, choose soothing foods, and use only suitable pain relief according to the label or professional advice. Avoid sharing cups and wash your hands while you are unwell. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without discussing it with the prescriber.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or a muffled voice. Arrange prompt assessment if you become markedly dehydrated, develop a spreading rash, or feel significantly worse. A sore throat that is not improving, keeps returning, or is accompanied by persistent fever also deserves clinical review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms make testing useful, whether a negative result needs another sample, and which pain-relief options suit you. You can also ask how to reduce spread at home and when it is reasonable to return to work, school, or close contact.

Questions people ask

Does a rapid test detect every sore-throat infection?

No. It looks for streptococcal bacteria and does not diagnose viral causes or every other throat infection.

Can a negative result still need follow-up?

Sometimes. A clinician may recommend laboratory testing or review when symptoms and examination do not fit the rapid result.
