Short answer

Randomly getting hives means raised itchy welts are appearing without a clear trigger, and lip, tongue, or throat swelling needs urgent attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Raised, itchy welts that can shift or fade
Useful diary items
Medicines, foods, illness, heat, pressure, exercise, and timing
Emergency feature

Why hives can seem random

Hives are temporary raised areas caused by the release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Individual welts may change shape, appear in different places, and fade while new ones arise. Triggers can include infections, heat, cold, pressure, exercise, stress, foods, medicines, or insect contact, but a clear cause is not always found. Hives may occur with Itchy Skin, Skin Rash, or Skin Swelling. Deeper swelling of the lips or eyelids is called angioedema and can accompany hives.

How to manage episodes

Photograph a flare and keep a simple diary of foods, medicines, illness, exercise, heat, pressure, and timing. Wear loose clothing, use cool rather than hot water, and avoid scratching. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice, even if you suspect it triggered a reaction. A clinician may discuss Antihistamine Treatment; an Oral Corticosteroid Treatment may sometimes be considered for selected severe flares. Treatment choice depends on your health, medicines, and the pattern of symptoms.

When hives need urgent help

Call emergency services immediately if hives occur with trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, voice change, dizziness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or inside the mouth. These symptoms can indicate a serious allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice when episodes keep returning, last beyond a brief flare, disturb sleep, follow a new medicine, or leave bruising, pain, or marks rather than fading normally. Recurrent swelling without obvious welts also warrants assessment for Angioedema.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern be Hives or another rash? Which triggers should I track? What treatment can I use during a flare? What symptoms require emergency action, and do I need a written plan?

Questions people ask

Why do hives appear when I have not changed my diet?

Hives can follow infections, heat, pressure, exercise, medicines, or other immune triggers, and sometimes no single trigger is found.

Are hives and angioedema the same?

They are related but different patterns: hives affect the surface of the skin, while angioedema is deeper swelling that often affects lips or eyelids.
