What should you know about random swollen upper lip?

The timing and accompanying signs help narrow the possibilities. Contact with a new lip product, food, toothpaste, or medicine can irritate or trigger an allergic response. A painful, warm, tender area with a blister, sore, dental problem, or fever may point toward infection or inflammation. Angioedema is deeper swelling beneath the skin and may affect the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat; it can occur with hives or on its own. One episode does not identify the cause, so note what happened before it began.

Stop using any newly introduced lip or facial product and avoid suspected foods or medicines until a clinician advises you. Do not puncture the swelling. A cool compress held gently against the area may be soothing. Photograph the lip, record the start time, and note hives, itching, pain, fever, dental symptoms, or any new exposure. If the swelling is recurrent, arrange a medical assessment and take a list of medicines, supplements, and recent foods.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, voice change, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or inside the mouth.
