Bumps centered on hairs, especially after shaving, sweating, tight clothing, or friction, can fit folliculitis. Keratosis pilaris creates many small, rough bumps, often on the upper arms or thighs, because keratin collects around hair follicles. The bumps may be red, skin-coloured, itchy, tender, or unchanged for a while. Location and surface matter: a rough, even texture suggests a different process from isolated pustules or painful lesions.

Clean the area gently and avoid picking, scrubbing, or squeezing. Pause close shaving and reduce friction from tight sleeves or straps. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer; for persistent rough follicular bumps, a clinician may suggest a product containing a keratolytic ingredient and explain how often to use it. If bumps contain pus, avoid sharing razors or towels and arrange an assessment rather than self-starting leftover antibiotics.

Seek prompt care if redness is rapidly expanding, pain is increasing, the area feels hot, pus is spreading, or fever develops.
