What should you know about random moles appearing?

Compare the mark with your other moles and look for a noticeably different appearance. Record whether it is evenly coloured, has a regular outline, and remains stable. Warning features include asymmetry, an irregular border, several colours, rapid change, persistent itching, bleeding, crusting, or soreness. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they are reasons for a clinician to inspect the mole closely.

Take a clear photograph beside a scale, note the date and body site, and repeat photographs under similar lighting. Protect the area from excessive sun with clothing or broad-spectrum sunscreen. Do not shave, scratch, burn, or apply home mole-removal products. A dermatologist can discuss observation, Surgical Excision, or Mole Removal after examining the lesion and considering whether tissue should be tested.

Book a skin assessment for a new mole that continues to change, a mark that looks unlike your others, or any lesion that bleeds, crusts, itches persistently, or fails to heal. Seek prompt review if change is rapid or the area becomes painful. Urgent care is appropriate for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.

Ask whether the mole needs dermoscopic examination, a planned follow-up, or removal for testing; what exact changes should prompt earlier review; and how to protect the area during sun exposure. Bring older photographs if available.
