Short answer

Random dizziness may come from the inner ear, dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, medicines, anxiety, or a heart rhythm problem, so the pattern matters.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What dizziness can mean

Dizziness can feel like spinning, swaying, lightheadedness, or feeling close to fainting. Brief spinning triggered by turning your head can occur with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Thirst, dark urine, heat exposure, vomiting, or diarrhoea can point towards dehydration or heat exhaustion. Tiredness, breathlessness, or pale skin may accompany anaemia or iron deficiency anaemia. Shaking, sweating, hunger, or confusion can occur when blood sugar is low. A racing or irregular heartbeat with lightheadedness needs medical assessment because atrial fibrillation and other rhythm problems can affect blood flow.

A single episode may settle, but repeated or unexplained dizziness deserves a clinical review. The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis.

What to do during an episode

Sit or lie down straight away, keep your head still if the room is spinning, and avoid driving, heights, and machinery until you feel steady. Sip water if you can drink safely, move away from heat, and eat a normal snack if you may have missed a meal and have no swallowing problem. Record when it began, how long it lasted, what you were doing, recent illness, medicines, food and fluids, and any hearing, vision, chest, or heartbeat changes. Arrange a clinician review if episodes recur or interfere with walking.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for dizziness with facial drooping, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new severe headache, collapse, seizure, or inability to walk. Get urgent advice after a head injury, with persistent vomiting, or when an irregular heartbeat or fainting accompanies the symptom. Otherwise, book an appointment for recurrent dizziness, new hearing symptoms, or episodes linked to a new medicine.

Questions for your doctor

Could the timing and trigger suggest an inner-ear, blood-pressure, blood-sugar, blood-count, or heart-rhythm cause? Should any medicines, hydration habits, or meals be reviewed? Which symptoms should prompt urgent help?
