What should you know about random dark red spots on your skin?

Raised spots with a blocked pore can occur with acne. Bumps around hairs, particularly after shaving or sweating, fit folliculitis. Recurrent central facial redness with flushing or visible small vessels can occur with rosacea. A rash around the mouth, nose, or eyes has a different pattern and may be perioral dermatitis. Darkening after inflammation can remain after a spot settles, while razor bumps can follow ingrown hairs. These conditions can present with red spots; the spots themselves do not identify which condition is present.

Consider whether the marks are flat or raised, itchy or painful, centred on hairs, linked to a new product, or leaving brown or purple colour. A photograph taken before applying makeup can help a clinician compare changes.

Use a mild cleanser, avoid scrubs and picking, and pause newly introduced fragranced products. Shave gently with the direction of hair growth or take a break if shaving triggers bumps. Use a non-irritating moisturiser and protect exposed skin from sun, which can deepen leftover marks. Do not start several acne or steroid products together; irritation can make redness harder to interpret. A dermatologist can discuss options such as LED light therapy when the underlying pattern is suitable.

Seek urgent advice if spots appear with breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or severe pain. Arrange a routine assessment if they persist, recur frequently, scar, involve the eyes, or change in colour or shape. Prompt review is also sensible when a spot is warm and draining, because infection may need targeted treatment.

Ask whether the spots are acne, folliculitis, rosacea, razor bumps, or another pattern; what products to stop; whether treatment could irritate the skin; and how to distinguish a flare from a leftover mark.
