What does radiculopathy in the cervical region mean?

The cervical region is the neck. Nerve roots leave the spinal cord through openings between the neck bones and carry signals to parts of the upper limb. When a root is crowded by a disc problem, age-related narrowing or another change, it can produce sharp, burning or electric pain from the neck toward the shoulder or arm. Tingling, numbness or reduced strength may follow a particular pattern. Symptoms can change with neck position, coughing or lifting, but the pattern is not enough to confirm the cause on its own.

A clinical assessment may include neck movement, sensation, reflexes and strength. Imaging is considered when symptoms persist, the examination suggests significant nerve involvement or another problem needs to be excluded.

Arrange an assessment if arm symptoms are new, recurring or interfering with sleep, work or grip. Until then, keep gently moving within comfort, vary prolonged sitting or screen positions, and avoid activities that clearly intensify radiating pain. Do not forcefully stretch or manipulate the neck when symptoms are spreading or strength is changing. A clinician can discuss activity modification, suitable pain relief and physiotherapy based on your examination.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly worsening weakness, difficulty walking or balancing, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness involving both arms or legs, or severe neck pain after a significant injury. Fever, unexplained illness or severe pain that is not settling also warrants prompt assessment because a nerve problem may not be the only explanation.

Ask which nerve pattern your examination suggests, whether your reflexes and strength are reassuring, what activities should be limited, and when imaging or specialist review would add useful information.
