Racing heart and shortness of breath

A fast heartbeat can occur with exertion, fever, dehydration, pain, anxiety, stimulant use, or a change in heart rhythm. Breathlessness may also occur with asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, or anaemia. Angina can cause breathlessness or chest discomfort, while anaphylaxis may bring breathing difficulty with swelling, hives, or dizziness. The combination does not identify one diagnosis.

Stop exertion and sit upright in a safe place. Note when symptoms began, what you were doing, and whether the heartbeat feels regular or irregular. Avoid driving if faint or severely breathless. Arrange medical assessment promptly, especially for episodes at rest or with known heart or lung disease. Bring a list of medicines and supplements.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, coughing blood, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. A racing heartbeat with marked weakness or collapse also requires emergency help.

Ask whether you need an examination, heart tracing, blood tests, or lung assessment. Describe duration, pattern, triggers, chest pain, wheeze, fever, swelling, or dizziness.
