Can raccoons carry rabies? What to do after contact

Rabies is an infection that can spread through saliva from an infected mammal, usually when an animal bites. Scratches can also be an exposure if claws are contaminated with saliva. Contact with the animal's fur alone is not considered a rabies exposure, but saliva entering the eyes, mouth, nose, or an open wound can be. An animal acting unusually—such as showing unprovoked aggression, unusual tameness, confusion, weakness, or difficulty walking—should not be approached; however, normal-looking behaviour does not rule out infection.

Rabies symptoms may not begin immediately. Once symptoms develop, the illness is extremely serious, which is why a possible exposure is assessed before symptoms appear. A clinician or public-health service can help determine whether preventive treatment is needed based on the contact, the wound, and whether the animal can be safely assessed.

Move away from the raccoon and keep other people and pets away. Do not catch, corner, feed, or handle the animal. If it can be done without approaching it, note its location and appearance and contact local animal-control or public-health services.

Wash a bite, scratch, or exposed wound straight away with plenty of running water and soap for about fifteen minutes. Do not seal the wound with household substances. Then contact an urgent-care service, emergency department, or public-health authority promptly, even if the injury looks small, the animal ran away, or the contact happened earlier. Ask about rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, which may include wound care, vaccine, and an immune product depending on the assessment.

Seek urgent medical advice after any raccoon bite or scratch, saliva contact with broken skin, or saliva splash to the eyes, mouth, or nose. Go to emergency care for heavy bleeding, a deep wound, an injury to the face, hand, or neck, severe pain, loss of movement, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever.

Do not wait for tingling, fever, anxiety, difficulty swallowing, or other symptoms before getting advice. Tell the clinician when and where the contact occurred, whether skin was broken, where saliva may have touched, whether the raccoon can be identified, and whether you have had rabies vaccination before. Also mention any wound treatment already provided.

Ask: Does this contact count as a rabies exposure? Do I need rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, and when should it begin? Does the wound need additional cleaning, closure, a tetanus update, or antibiotics? Should animal-control or public-health services investigate the raccoon? What symptoms or wound changes should prompt immediate return?
