What should you know about rabies shots for people?

Rabies shots train the immune system to recognise rabies virus. They can be used before a predictable risk or as part of post-exposure care. A clinician decides the plan by reviewing the animal, the contact, the wound location, and prior vaccination. Some exposures require vaccine together with rabies immunoglobulin, while others may not need rabies treatment. A small scratch can still deserve assessment if saliva may have contaminated it.

Rinse and wash the affected area with soap and running water as soon as possible. If the eyes, mouth, or nose were exposed, flush with clean water and seek care. Do not handle the animal again or try to catch it. Write down when and where the contact happened, what animal was involved, and whether it was behaving abnormally. Take this information to a healthcare service promptly, along with any previous rabies vaccination details.

Arrange urgent assessment after a mammal bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or a mucous membrane when rabies is possible. This is especially important for bat contact, exposures during travel, deep wounds, or an animal that cannot be observed. Trouble swallowing, unusual sensitivity to air or water, agitation, weakness, or confusion after a possible exposure requires emergency care; do not wait for these symptoms to appear before seeking preventive treatment.

Ask how the exposure is classified, whether your previous vaccination changes the doses needed, whether immunoglobulin is appropriate, and how to care for the wound while treatment is arranged.
