Rabies: meaning of the medical term

Transmission is associated with saliva from an infected mammal entering a bite, scratch, open wound, or mucous membrane. Casual contact, touching fur, or being near an animal does not by itself create the same exposure. Once symptoms affecting the nervous system appear, rabies is a medical emergency, so prevention must be considered promptly after a possible exposure.

Clean the contact site immediately with soap and running water. Avoid applying irritants or closing a deep wound before assessment. Contact urgent medical services and describe the animal, the type of contact, the body site, and the time it occurred. A clinician can decide whether post-exposure prophylaxis is required and coordinate wound and tetanus care.

Seek urgent care after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure involving broken skin or the eyes or mouth. Emergency assessment is also needed for confusion, unusual agitation, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, weakness, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. Do not wait for these symptoms after a suspected exposure.
