Rabies jab for dogs: what patients should know

Dog vaccination lowers the chance that the animal will develop rabies and pass it on. It does not make every bite harmless, and it does not replace an assessment after saliva contacts broken skin, the eyes, mouth, or a wound. Ask for the dog's vaccination record and note whether the animal is known, healthy, and available for observation.

Wash the area immediately with plenty of soap and running water, without scrubbing deeply or sealing the wound. Seek urgent medical advice, especially if the bite broke skin or saliva reached damaged skin. Take details about the dog, the time and place of contact, and its vaccination status. A clinician may recommend rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, tetanus care, or treatment for other bite injuries.

Go for urgent assessment after any potentially rabies-related bite, scratch, or saliva exposure; do not wait for symptoms. Emergency care is appropriate for deep wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, injuries to the face, hand, or neck, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain.

Ask whether the exposure needs post-exposure prophylaxis, whether tetanus protection is due, how the wound should be dressed, and what information should be reported about the dog.
