Rabies in a cow: what to know

A cow with rabies may become unusually restless, aggressive, fearful, or oddly tame. Drooling, trouble swallowing, a changed voice, weakness, staggering, and paralysis may follow. These signs are not enough to diagnose rabies, and approaching the cow to inspect it can create avoidable risk.

The virus is carried in saliva. A possible human exposure occurs when saliva reaches a bite or scratch, broken skin, or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Simply seeing the cow or touching an uncontaminated surface is not an exposure.

Move people and animals away without cornering the cow. Do not milk, slaughter, transport, feed, or physically restrain it. Call a veterinarian or the relevant animal-health service and follow directions for isolation and assessment.
