What should you know about rabies foaming at the mouth?

Rabies can disrupt the nerves and muscles involved in swallowing. Saliva may then collect in the mouth, while painful swallowing, spasms, confusion, or weakness make it difficult to clear. Drooling or froth can therefore appear in a person or animal with severe neurological illness. Foaming also has other possible causes, including a seizure, choking, poisoning, or severe breathing trouble. The appearance alone cannot identify rabies.

If a person is foaming, confused, having spasms, or struggling to breathe, call emergency services and avoid putting fingers, food, or liquid in the mouth. Keep bystanders and pets away from saliva. If you had a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes, wash the area with soap and running water and seek urgent medical advice. A clinician can assess whether Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis or Rabies Vaccination is relevant.

Get emergency help for foaming with breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, a seizure, severe confusion, inability to swallow, or rapidly worsening weakness. Seek urgent assessment after a possible mammal bite or scratch even if nobody is foaming and the wound seems minor. Do not handle a sick or unusually aggressive animal; contact local animal-control or public-health services for guidance.

Ask what may explain the foaming, whether saliva contact created an exposure, what wound cleaning is needed, and whether preventive treatment should begin. Share the animal species, its behaviour, the type of contact, and the time of the incident.
