Rabbit hiccups: what to know

Hiccup-like movements in a rabbit are not always ordinary hiccups, so breathing, appetite, posture, and repeated episodes should be checked. Brief rhythmic movements can follow eating or swallowing, but rabbits can also make similar movements when they are choking, distressed, or struggling to breathe. A video can help a veterinarian identify the pattern.

Watch the chest and abdomen rather than focusing only on the sound. Note whether the rabbit can breathe quietly through the nose, remains alert, and continues eating and passing droppings. Drooling, repeated swallowing, stretching the neck, pawing at the mouth, nasal discharge, or a hunched posture raises concern for a problem needing assessment.

Digestive discomfort, including acid reflux or gastritis, may be considered alongside dental, airway, or swallowing disorders. These conditions cannot be diagnosed from a hiccup-like movement alone.

Keep the rabbit calm, upright, and in a quiet, well-ventilated area. Remove access to treats or objects that may be lodged in the mouth, but do not force food, water, or medicine and do not put fingers into the mouth. Record the episode and arrange veterinary advice if it repeats or the rabbit seems uncomfortable.

Do not give human acid-reflux medication or attempt home choking techniques. A veterinarian may examine the mouth, breathing, abdomen, and diet before recommending treatment such as acid reflux medication.

Treat open-mouth breathing, blue or grey gums, collapse, severe weakness, choking movements, heavy drooling, or inability to swallow as an emergency. Go promptly for persistent rapid breathing, a swollen abdomen, refusal to eat, or no droppings, because rabbits can deteriorate quickly.

Ask whether the movement looks like hiccups, coughing, choking, or pain; whether teeth or the airway need checking; and which food, medication, or environmental changes are appropriate. Bring the video and details of the last meal.
