What should you know about RA knee swelling?

Short answer
RA knee swelling means the knee is holding extra fluid or has inflamed tissues, but swelling alone cannot identify its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible causes
- Injury, arthritis, bursitis, gout, or a Baker's Cyst
- Assessment clues
- Warmth, pain, timing, movement, and injury history
- Immediate focus
- Protect the knee and watch for urgent warning signs
What it can mean
A swollen knee may follow an injury, irritation of a cushioning sac, crystal inflammation, cartilage wear, or a fluid-filled Baker's Cyst. A torn meniscus or ACL Tear can also cause swelling, especially after a twist. Knee Osteoarthritis may produce activity-related swelling, while Gout often causes sudden, intense inflammation. A clinician considers pain, warmth, movement, timing, injury, and other symptoms together.
The swelling may be inside the joint or around it. Examination can help distinguish an effusion from swelling in nearby tissues. Sometimes fluid is sampled to check for crystals, infection, or blood when the cause is uncertain.
What to do
Reduce activities that increase pain and avoid kneeling, jumping, or twisting while the knee is swollen. Rest it in a comfortable position, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and elevate the leg if that eases fullness. Do not place ice directly on skin.
Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, returns, limits walking, or follows an injury. A clinician may recommend examination, imaging, or Joint Aspiration; treatment depends on the underlying cause rather than the swelling alone.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for a hot, very painful swollen knee, fever, feeling acutely unwell, inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed joint, or marked swelling after significant trauma. Sudden calf swelling or breathlessness also needs urgent attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what findings point to an effusion, whether fluid testing or imaging is useful, which movements to avoid, and how to restart activity safely. Tell the clinician when the swelling began, whether it followed a twist, and whether other joints are affected.

Questions people ask
Can knee swelling be treated at home?
Short-term activity reduction, elevation, and a wrapped cold pack may ease symptoms, but persistent or recurrent swelling needs assessment.
Does every swollen knee need fluid removal?
No. Joint Aspiration is considered when fluid testing or pressure relief could help clarify or manage the problem.
