What should you know about RA fatigue symptoms?

Short answer
Fatigue symptoms can include low energy, reduced stamina, sleepiness and slower thinking; their timing and accompanying changes help a clinician look for the cause.

Symptoms to notice
Fatigue is more than an ordinary wish to rest. You may struggle to climb stairs, concentrate, stay awake, exercise or complete familiar tasks. Record whether sleep refreshes you and whether symptoms follow illness, stress, pain, a change in medicines or missed meals. Associated signs such as pale skin, breathlessness, thirst, fever, digestive symptoms, low mood or disrupted sleep can guide assessment. Fatigue alone does not identify one particular condition.
How to prepare for assessment
Arrange a GP review if symptoms persist, recur or interfere with daily life. Write down when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how sleep and activity are affected. Include medicines, supplements, recent infections and alcohol intake. Use pacing: break demanding tasks into smaller periods, take planned rests and increase activity gradually. Regular fluids, nourishing meals and a steady bedtime can support recovery while the cause is being assessed.
Warning signs
Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden confusion, new one-sided weakness or inability to stay awake. Seek prompt advice for fatigue with black stools, heavy bleeding, persistent fever, marked thirst with very little urine or fast deterioration. Avoid driving or operating equipment when sleepiness affects alertness.
What to ask
Ask whether your pattern suggests a sleep problem, infection, Anaemia, medication effect or another condition; whether examination or blood tests are needed; and what level of activity is sensible while waiting for results.

Questions people ask
Is fatigue the same as sleepiness?
No. Sleepiness is a tendency to fall asleep, while fatigue can be low energy or reduced stamina without actually feeling ready to sleep.
Can a recent infection explain symptoms?
It can, but ongoing or worsening symptoms should still be reviewed, especially when other warning signs appear.
