What should you know about quartan fever?

The word quartan refers to a pattern traditionally associated with fever returning on every fourth day, counting the day an episode begins. In everyday use, people may use the term for an intermittent fever, but a diary of temperatures and symptoms is more useful than the label alone.

Fever is a sign, not a diagnosis. It can occur with infections affecting the airways, skin, or other parts of the body. A fever that comes and goes may also reflect treatment timing or a condition that needs a closer examination. The pattern does not identify the cause by itself.

Record when each fever begins, how long it lasts, your measured temperature, chills, sweating, pain, cough, rash, urinary symptoms, and any recent travel. Drink fluids as tolerated and rest. Use fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, taking account of your age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines.

Arrange a medical assessment if the fever keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may examine you and decide whether tests are needed. Mention recent travel, animal contact, new medicines, and contact with someone who was unwell.

Seek urgent help for confusion, difficulty breathing, a severe headache with a stiff neck, a seizure, fainting, a rapidly spreading rash, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt advice for a fever in a very young child, during pregnancy, or when you have a weakened immune system.
