Short answer

Quanta Q switch laser delivers high-energy pulses in a short burst to target selected pigment, but diagnosis, skin tone, and treatment settings determine whether it is appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How Q-switched energy works

Q-switched technology produces a very brief pulse that can fragment pigment while limiting the time heat remains in the skin. It may be used in approaches such as [Laser Toning](/treatments/laser-and-energy/laser-toning/), depending on the concern and the clinician’s assessment. The treated area can feel warm or tender and may show redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, crusting, or temporary lightening or darkening. A dark spot should not be treated cosmetically until its cause has been considered.

Before and after treatment

Tell the clinician about tanning, previous laser reactions, cold sores, active dermatitis, medicines, and a tendency toward raised scars. Follow advice about stopping irritating products and arrive with clean skin. After treatment, cleanse gently, do not pick crusts, and protect the area from sunlight. Keep follow-up plans so the response can be reviewed before another session is considered.

When to seek care

Call the treating clinic if discomfort worsens, redness spreads, blisters appear, or the area develops increasing warmth, swelling, or discharge. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, marked facial swelling, or eye pain or vision changes. Have any changing, bleeding, or non-healing lesion examined promptly rather than repeatedly treating it with laser.

Questions for your doctor

What is the diagnosis and why is Q-switched treatment suitable? Which wavelength and settings will you use for my skin tone? What healing changes are expected? How should I manage crusting, and what symptoms mean I should contact you? Is [Q-Switched Laser](/technology/q-switched-laser/) being used for pigment, tattoo ink, or another target?

Questions people ask

Will Q-switched laser make a spot disappear immediately?

No. Pigment may change gradually, and the area can look temporarily darker or crusted while it heals.

Can Q-switched laser irritate skin?

Yes. Redness, tenderness, crusting, and pigment changes are possible and should be discussed before treatment.
