Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for freckles

Freckles are small areas of increased pigment that often become more visible after ultraviolet exposure. A clinician should examine a changing, irregular, bleeding, or very different spot before cosmetic treatment; a laser should not be used to avoid diagnosing a suspicious lesion. Q-switched pulses target pigment in the skin, and the treated area may briefly look darker, red, or mildly swollen. Freckles can return or become more noticeable with later sun exposure, and nearby skin may respond differently.

Tell the clinician about recent tanning, a history of dark marks after inflammation, cold sores, pregnancy, and medicines or skincare that may increase sensitivity. Follow instructions about avoiding sun before the appointment. Afterward, cleanse gently, leave any flaking skin alone, and use the advised moisturizer and sunscreen. Avoid deliberate tanning while the area heals. Keep a record of spots that change so the clinician can distinguish expected recovery from a new concern.

Ask for prompt assessment if pain or swelling increases, redness spreads, blisters develop, drainage appears, or you feel unwell. Arrange a skin review for a spot that changes in shape, colour, border, or sensation, especially if it bleeds. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or sudden widespread swelling after treatment.
