What should you know about the purpose of hiccups?

Short answer
Hiccups are involuntary diaphragm spasms that briefly interrupt breathing, usually settle without treatment and sometimes reflect irritation of the digestive or breathing reflexes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Mechanism
- Sudden diaphragm contraction with brief airway closure
- Common triggers
- Fast eating, swallowed air, fizzy drinks and sudden changes
- Assessment
- Persistent or disruptive episodes need medical advice
Why hiccups occur
A hiccup begins when the diaphragm contracts suddenly, followed by quick closure at the top of the airway that creates the familiar sound. Eating quickly, swallowing air, fizzy drinks, sudden temperature changes, laughter or emotional stress can trigger a short episode.
Hiccups that keep returning or continue for a prolonged period can be linked with reflux, stomach irritation, medicines or less common problems affecting nerves or body chemistry. Hiccups are a symptom, not a useful way to diagnose one condition. Acid Reflux and Gastritis can be relevant possibilities when digestive symptoms occur too.
What may help
Pause meals, take small sips of water, eat slowly and avoid fizzy drinks or large meals if they trigger episodes. Keep a note of timing, foods, medicines and accompanying symptoms if hiccups recur. Do not frighten yourself or hold your breath for long periods, and avoid swallowing objects or using unsafe tricks.
A clinician can review persistent hiccups, reflux symptoms, abdominal discomfort and medicines. Treatment depends on the cause; Acid Reflux Medication may be considered only when reflux is part of the assessment.
When to arrange medical care
Arrange medical advice if hiccups persist, repeatedly disturb sleep or eating, cause vomiting, or occur with trouble swallowing, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, weakness, confusion or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for sudden severe symptoms, especially when they affect alertness or breathing.
Questions for your clinician
Ask what might be triggering the hiccups, whether reflux or stomach irritation fits your other symptoms, whether a medicine could contribute, and what changes should prompt follow-up.

No clear essential purpose has been established; they are a reflex involving the diaphragm and airway.
Can reflux cause hiccups?
Reflux may irritate the reflex pathways in some people, particularly when hiccups occur with burning or regurgitation.
