Purpose of Braxton Hicks contractions

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are temporary womb tightenings that prepare the body for labour without necessarily meaning labour has started.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Also called
- Practice contractions or false labour
- Typical pattern
- Irregular tightenings that may ease with rest or a position change
What they mean
These practice contractions may feel like the abdomen becoming firm, tense, or uncomfortable before relaxing. They are often irregular and may settle when you rest, change position, drink fluids, or empty your bladder. Their purpose is linked to the womb practising contraction and relaxation; they do not reliably predict when birth will happen. Some people notice them more after activity or later in pregnancy, while others feel very little.
What you can do
Pause and notice the timing, strength, and pattern. Rest on your side, take gentle fluids, and change position if that feels comfortable. Avoid using pain or labour medicines unless your maternity team has advised you. If the tightenings become regular, stronger, closer together, or continue despite rest, contact your maternity service for individual guidance.
When to seek care
Seek urgent maternity advice for painful or regular contractions, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, fever, severe abdominal pain, or reduced baby movements. Before the expected birth window, persistent tightenings with pelvic pressure, backache, or fluid loss need prompt assessment because they can occur with preterm labour.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask what contraction pattern your maternity unit wants you to report, how to monitor baby movements, and which symptoms should take you directly to hospital. Ask whether your pregnancy history changes the advice about early tightenings.
