Purple Stretch Marks During Pregnancy: What to Know

Short answer
Purple stretch marks during pregnancy are common skin changes caused by stretching and hormonal effects, and they often fade gradually after birth.

What purple marks mean
Stretch marks, also called striae, form when the deeper skin layers change as the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, or other areas expand. Early marks can be purple, reddish, or pink because of their immature appearance and visible blood vessels. Pregnancy-related marks are called striae gravidarum. Their colour usually becomes less noticeable over time, although lines may remain as lighter or slightly indented marks. They are not contagious and do not mean that the pregnancy is harming the baby.
What you can do now
Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to reduce dryness and itching, and avoid scratching the area. Moisturising cannot reliably prevent stretch marks, but it can make tight skin feel more comfortable. Choose loose, breathable clothing and use sun protection because tanning can make the contrast more obvious. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, check any prescription cream or procedure with your obstetric clinician and dermatologist before use. After pregnancy, options that may improve texture or colour include Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, and Carboxytherapy; suitability depends on skin tone, timing, the area treated, and whether breastfeeding has ended.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review if the marks are intensely itchy, painful, blistered, oozing, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by a widespread rash. Severe itch in pregnancy, especially away from the marks or on the palms and soles, deserves prompt obstetric advice because it may have another cause. A dermatologist can distinguish stretch marks from an inflammatory rash and discuss safe timing for treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour and texture fit pregnancy stretch marks, which moisturisers are suitable for your skin, whether any medicine should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and when a procedure could be considered after delivery.
