Pulmonary hypertension symptoms in adults

The condition involves increased pressure in the blood vessels between the heart and lungs. The right side of the heart may need to work harder to move blood through the lungs. Early symptoms can be subtle and may be mistaken for reduced fitness. Some people later notice ankle or leg swelling, a racing heartbeat, or breathlessness when lying down. These features can also occur with other heart, lung, or blood conditions, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinician may review your history, examine your heart and lungs, check oxygen levels, and arrange tests. Conditions such as heart failure, obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity, or chronic kidney disease may be relevant to the assessment.

Arrange a medical appointment if breathlessness is new, gradually worsening, or limiting walking, stairs, or ordinary activities. Record when symptoms happen, whether they occur at rest or with exertion, and any swelling, palpitations, dizziness, or fainting. Bring a list of medicines and details of known heart, lung, kidney, or sleep conditions. Do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Seek emergency help now for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, or chest pain that is intense, persistent, or accompanied by sweating or nausea. Prompt assessment is also needed after a sudden major change in exercise tolerance. These signs require urgent evaluation and should not be attributed to pulmonary hypertension without examination.
