What should you know about puffiness under lower lip?

A small, soft swelling can appear after lip biting, shaving, a new toothpaste, cosmetic product, or contact with an irritant. Itching or raised patches can occur with hives or angioedema. Warmth, tenderness, spreading redness, crusting, or drainage can point toward cellulitis or another infection. A firm spot beside a tooth, gum soreness, or dental pain suggests that a dental source may be involved. A clinician can examine the skin, mouth, teeth, and nearby lymph nodes to separate these possibilities.

Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or repeatedly touching the area. Pause any newly introduced lip, skin, or oral-care product and rinse gently with lukewarm water. A cool, clean compress may reduce discomfort. Note when the swelling began, whether it is changing, and whether food, medicine, a bite, or a cosmetic preceded it. Arrange medical or dental advice if it persists, recurs, becomes painful, or is accompanied by a sore tooth.

Seek emergency help if swelling involves the tongue or throat, or if breathing, swallowing, speaking, or handling saliva becomes difficult. Get prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, marked warmth, severe pain, fever, pus, or redness that is spreading across the face. These features need assessment for a significant allergic reaction or infection rather than home observation.

Ask whether the pattern fits an allergy, irritation, dental problem, or infection; whether any medicines or products should be stopped; and what changes should trigger urgent review. Bring a list of recent foods, medicines, dental work, and products that touched the area.
