What should you know about pubic shaving rash?

A razor can create tiny surface injuries, remove protective oils, and push short hairs back toward the skin. Friction from underwear or sweat may then intensify redness and stinging. Small bumps centred on hairs can fit folliculitis or ingrown hairs; a rash that extends beyond shaved skin may instead reflect contact dermatitis from gel, soap, or fragrance. Persistent scale, a ring-shaped edge, or blisters needs a different assessment.

Stop shaving, waxing, and exfoliating until the skin is calm. Rinse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. A cool compress can ease heat and stinging. Choose breathable clothing, change out of damp garments, and avoid applying alcohol, perfume, or household remedies. Do not squeeze bumps or pull at hairs under the skin. If the rash returns, record the razor, products, direction of shaving, and timing so a clinician can identify the trigger.

Book an assessment if the rash lasts, spreads outside the shaved area, repeatedly returns, or forms painful, crusted, or pus-filled bumps. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, severe pain, open sores, or trouble passing urine. New blisters or sores in the genital area should be examined rather than treated as simple shaving irritation.
