What should you know about pubic muscle strain?

Short answer
A pubic muscle strain is an overstretched or injured muscle near the pubic region that often hurts with loading, stretching, or sudden movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- A sudden forceful contraction or rapid change of movement
- Symptoms to describe
- Tenderness, bruising, weakness, and pain with inner-thigh loading
- Recovery approach
- Reduce aggravating load, then rebuild strength progressively
How a strain behaves
The inner-thigh and lower abdominal muscles help stabilise the pelvis. A strain can happen when these tissues are forced to lengthen or contract quickly, such as during a sprint, kick, slip, or sudden change in training. Pain may be local or spread into the groin or upper thigh, with tenderness and reduced strength. Muscle strain is a general diagnosis; symptoms such as thigh pain, lower-back pain, or cramps can have other causes too.
What may help
For the first stage, reduce painful lifting, running, kicking, and wide-leg movements. Use comfortable positions and gentle walking if tolerated. Do not test the area repeatedly by sprinting or forcefully stretching it. Once everyday movement is easier, a physiotherapist can introduce controlled range-of-motion work, then strengthening for the inner thigh, hip, trunk, and pelvis. Return to sport should be gradual, with the next activity level based on symptoms rather than a fixed deadline.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when pain is not settling, keeps returning, or prevents normal walking or sleep. Get prompt care after a forceful injury if there is a popping sensation, substantial bruising, sudden weakness, or inability to bear weight. Fever, spreading redness, numbness, severe swelling, or pain unrelated to movement also warrants medical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which muscle may be involved, whether the hip or back should be checked, and which exercises are suitable now. Share the triggering movement, pain location, bruising, weakness, and how symptoms respond after activity.

Questions people ask
Is a pubic muscle strain the same as normal soreness?
No. Soreness after exercise is often more diffuse, while a strain can cause focal tenderness, pain with contraction, or sudden weakness.
When can you return to sport?
Return when everyday movement and sport-specific drills are comfortable, strength is improving, and a clinician-guided progression does not cause a flare.
