What should you know about pta impedance audiometry?

Pure-tone audiometry measures the quietest tones you can hear at different pitches. You respond through headphones or ear inserts. Impedance testing uses a soft probe that changes air pressure in the ear canal and records how the eardrum moves. A separate tone may check the reflexes of small middle-ear muscles. Together, the findings can show whether hearing difficulty relates to sound reaching the inner ear or to a problem in the outer or middle ear.

Earwax buildup, fluid, infection, a perforated eardrum and some inner-ear disorders can produce different patterns. A result is not a diagnosis by itself; the clinician considers symptoms, examination findings and the quality of each response.

Tell the audiologist about hearing changes, tinnitus, dizziness, ear pressure, pain, discharge, noise exposure and previous ear procedures. Mention which ear feels worse and when symptoms began. Stay still and follow the response instructions. The probe may feel like pressure, but tell the clinician if it becomes uncomfortable. Ask them to explain each graph, whether wax or fluid may have affected it, and whether another test or referral is needed.

Obtain prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, new facial weakness, severe vertigo, severe headache, ear injury or neurological changes. Ear discharge, significant pain or fever also needs review. Avoid putting cotton buds, drops or other objects into an ear unless a clinician has advised it.

Ask whether the pattern is conductive or inner-ear hearing loss, what the tympanometry result shows, whether the eardrum looks healthy, whether you need follow-up, and which symptoms should prompt urgent review.
