Psoriatic arthritis and Sjogren syndrome: what to know

Psoriatic arthritis can cause joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness, tendon pain, and psoriasis or nail changes. Sjogren syndrome commonly involves dry eyes and a dry mouth, with fatigue and joint discomfort also possible. Having one condition does not prove that the other is present, and dryness can have medicine-related or environmental causes.

A clinician will ask about eye irritation, gritty feeling, dental problems, difficulty swallowing dry food, skin and nail changes, swelling, fatigue, and other symptoms. Examination and selected tests may help distinguish overlapping conditions and identify treatment effects.

Make an appointment if dry eyes or mouth persist, joint swelling continues, or fatigue affects daily life. Bring a full medicine list, including antihistamines and other products that can worsen dryness. Use preservative-free lubricating eye drops or frequent sips of water only if suitable for you, and arrange dental and eye care when dryness is ongoing.

Track morning stiffness, joint pain, swelling, rashes, eye symptoms, mouth symptoms, and any changes after medicines. Anti-inflammatory medication may help joint discomfort for some people, but treatment choice should consider kidney, stomach, pregnancy, and other health factors. Physiotherapy can maintain mobility without aggravating inflamed joints.

Seek urgent eye care for severe eye pain, marked redness, light sensitivity, or vision change. Get prompt medical help for fever with a hot swollen joint, trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden facial swelling, or rapidly worsening weakness. Persistent mouth dryness with sores or dental pain also deserves timely review.
