Psoriatic arthritis and rash: what to know

Psoriasis commonly causes areas of dry, scaly, inflamed skin, often on the scalp, elbows, knees, or other sites. Psoriatic arthritis can present with joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or tenderness where tendons attach. Skin and joint symptoms may begin at different times, and the rash may be mild when arthritis is active.

A rash can also result from eczema, infection, allergy, or a medicine. Its colour, scale, borders, location, itch, and timing help a clinician narrow the possibilities. Photograph changes in good light and note new products, medicines, illness, or injury.

Arrange assessment for a persistent or spreading rash, especially when joint pain or swelling is also present. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid scratching or picking. Keep a symptom diary covering rash flares, morning stiffness, nail changes, and activity limits.

A coordinated plan may include skin treatment, arthritis treatment, and movement support. Anti-inflammatory medication should be chosen with advice about your health history and other medicines. Physiotherapy can help protect movement when pain or stiffness changes how you walk or use your hands.

Seek urgent help for a rapidly spreading blistering or peeling rash, swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, fever with a painful rash, or a red painful eye with light sensitivity. Contact a clinician soon for a hot swollen joint, sudden loss of movement, or a rash that appears after starting a medicine.
