Psoriasis on the back of the neck

The area may feel rough, dry, tight, or itchy. On lighter skin, inflammation may look pink or red; on brown or dark skin, it can look purple, violet, grey, or darker than the surrounding skin. Scaling may extend into the hairline, and scratching can cause soreness, small cracks, or temporary skin colour changes. A neck rash can have other causes, so a clinician may examine the scale, border, scalp, and other body sites before confirming psoriasis.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser soon after washing, and cleanse with lukewarm water rather than scrubbing the patch. Avoid picking scale, tight collars, harsh hair products, and repeated friction from collars or necklaces. Keep a note of products or activities that make the patch flare. A clinician may recommend a topical medicine suited to the thin, sensitive neck skin; use it only as directed, because stronger products can cause irritation or thinning when used incorrectly. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the patch is new, spreading, repeatedly returning, or not settling with basic moisturising. Seek prompt care for marked pain, warmth, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure. A sudden widespread flare, or painful joints alongside the skin changes, also deserves timely medical review.
