Over-the-counter treatment for psoriasis nails

Moisturisers, protective ointments and gentle nail-care tools may reduce dryness, catching and cracking around an affected nail. They do not reliably reach every area involved in nail psoriasis, especially when inflammation is beneath the nail plate. A thick, crumbly or lifting nail can also reflect fungus or injury. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser to the nail folds and nearby skin after washing. Keep nails short, file gently and wear gloves for chores that involve water or chemicals. Avoid cutting cuticles, scraping beneath the nail, strong acids and unlabelled steroid or antifungal mixtures. Follow the product label, stop if burning or swelling develops, and arrange an assessment if the nail does not settle.

Arrange a review for ongoing pain, repeated lifting, marked thickening or changes affecting several nails. Seek prompt help for pus, warmth, spreading redness or fever. A new dark streak or a mark that changes should be examined rather than treated at home.
