Short answer

Pseudogout in the feet can cause a sudden hot, swollen, painful joint and needs assessment to distinguish it from gout or infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Sudden pain, warmth, swelling, and reduced movement in a foot joint.
Key distinction
Pseudogout and gout are different crystal-related conditions.
Immediate priority
Exclude infection when a joint is hot and acutely swollen.

What it may mean

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, occurs when crystals collect inside a joint and trigger inflammation. The ankle, midfoot, or a toe joint may become tender, warm, and difficult to move. This pattern can resemble gout, which involves different crystals, so the name alone does not confirm the diagnosis. A clinician may examine the foot, review medicines and health conditions, and sometimes test joint fluid.

Pain can make walking and wearing shoes difficult. Swelling may appear quickly, although some people have milder or recurring stiffness between flares. A history of joint problems, kidney disease, or metabolic conditions may affect the assessment, but symptoms still need individual evaluation.

Practical steps

Rest the affected foot, elevate it when comfortable, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Avoid putting extra pressure on a painful joint. Do not start anti-inflammatory medicine without checking that it is suitable for your kidneys, stomach, heart, pregnancy status, and other medicines. A clinician may recommend medication or another treatment after confirming the cause.

Write down when the pain began, which joint is affected, whether the skin is red or warm, and whether you have had similar attacks. That record can help distinguish a crystal flare from an injury or another joint problem.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new, rapidly swollen foot joint, especially when the pain is severe or walking is difficult. Seek urgent care if you also have fever, chills, feeling faint, spreading redness, a wound near the joint, or marked illness; infection can look similar and needs timely treatment. Get help quickly after an injury if the foot looks deformed or you cannot bear weight.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which joint is inflamed, whether joint-fluid testing is appropriate, how gout and infection will be excluded, which pain medicines fit your health history, and what to do if another flare affects your foot.

Questions people ask

Can pseudogout affect the feet?

Yes. It can inflame a foot or ankle joint and may make walking uncomfortable.

Is every swollen toe pseudogout?

No. Gout, injury, arthritis, and infection can cause similar swelling, so a clinical assessment matters.
