Protopic 0.03: what to know

Tacrolimus is a topical calcineurin inhibitor. It calms specific immune signals in the skin and is often considered when a clinician wants an anti-inflammatory option without using a topical steroid in the same way. It is applied to affected skin, not used as a general moisturiser or applied to an undiagnosed rash.

A burning, warmth, or stinging sensation can occur when treatment begins, especially on irritated skin. The medicine does not work instantly, and the diagnosis, body area, skin barrier, and treatment plan affect how it is used.

Apply a thin layer exactly as prescribed to clean, dry affected skin, and wash your hands afterward unless the hands are being treated. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, and inside of the nose. Do not cover the area with an airtight dressing unless the prescriber specifically instructs you to do so.

Use moisturiser as advised, protect treated skin from strong sunlight, and tell the prescriber about infection, cold sores, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medicines that affect immunity. Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors are prescription treatments and should be matched to the diagnosis.

Contact the prescriber if irritation is severe, persistent, or worsening, or if the treated area develops spreading redness, pus, blisters, fever, or a painful cold-sore-like eruption. Stop and seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask what condition is being treated, where the medicine should be applied, how often to use it, and when the plan should be reviewed. Clarify what to do after a missed application and which products or symptoms should prompt a call.
