Prostate cancer spread to bones and life expectancy

Bone spread is advanced prostate cancer, but it does not create one fixed timeline for everyone. Doctors review the number and location of bone lesions, whether the cancer is also present elsewhere, how quickly it has changed, symptoms, blood results, previous treatments and day-to-day strength. Some cancers remain controlled for a long time with treatment, while others need a change in treatment sooner.

The word life expectancy describes a population estimate, not a precise prediction for an individual. Your oncology team can explain what your own scans and response mean.

Attend planned reviews and report pain, reduced movement or new weakness early. Treatment can include hormone-based medicines, chemotherapy or other cancer-directed options, radiotherapy for selected painful areas, and bone-strengthening therapy. A physiotherapist can help preserve safe movement, while pain, sleep, mood and nutrition support can make treatment easier to manage. Keep a current list of medicines and supplements.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe bone pain, inability to stand, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms can reflect a fracture, spinal pressure or urinary blockage. New confusion, severe drowsiness or uncontrolled pain also warrants prompt contact with the care team.

Ask where the bone lesions are, whether any bone is weakened, what response the current treatment is showing, and what the next treatment option would be. Ask which symptoms should trigger an urgent call and how supportive care will be included.
