Pros of Nexplanon

Nexplanon is an etonogestrel implant rod placed under the skin of the upper arm by a trained clinician. It releases a progestogen that mainly prevents ovulation and also changes cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg. Because it stays in place, there is no need to remember a tablet each day or arrange contraception at every sexual encounter.

The implant contains no oestrogen, which may suit people who should avoid oestrogen-containing contraception. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Irregular spotting, lighter bleeding, more frequent bleeding or no bleeding can occur, and the pattern may be unpredictable.

Tell the clinician about medicines, health conditions, allergies and any chance of pregnancy. Ask when protection starts, how the insertion site will be cared for, and how the rod can be checked. Keep the arm clean as advised while the area settles. Arrange removal or replacement at the time recommended for your particular product and circumstances. If bleeding becomes difficult to manage, seek advice rather than removing it yourself.

Seek prompt care if the implant cannot be felt, appears to be coming through the skin, or the arm develops increasing redness, swelling, pus or severe pain. Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, severe headache, weakness, or a painful swollen leg. A pregnancy test and clinical review are needed if pregnancy is possible, especially with lower abdominal pain.
