What should you know about prognosis of rabies?

Rabies virus can enter through a bite, scratch, or saliva contacting broken skin or mucous membranes from an infected animal. Early illness may resemble other conditions, but neurological symptoms can progress rapidly. Once clinical symptoms develop, treatment options are very limited, which is why prevention after exposure is the focus.

A clinician considers the animal, the type and site of contact, whether the skin was broken, and local rabies risk. Do not judge the risk only by how healthy the animal looked at the time.

Wash a bite or scratch immediately with plenty of soap and running water, and use an antiseptic if available. Do not seal a wound before it has been assessed. Contact emergency or urgent medical services promptly, even if the wound is small, the animal ran away, or the exposure happened while travelling.

A healthcare professional may recommend rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, which can include wound care, vaccine, and other treatment based on the exposure. Rabies vaccination is also used for selected people with ongoing occupational or travel risk.

Seek urgent care now after any potentially risky bite, scratch, or saliva exposure. Go to emergency care for fever with confusion, difficulty swallowing, unusual agitation, weakness, or spasms after a possible exposure. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for advice.

Tell the clinician when and where the contact occurred, the animal involved, whether it can be observed, and whether skin was broken. Ask whether you need post-exposure treatment, which doses or wound checks are planned, and what to do if a dose is delayed.
