Prognosis of metastatic prostate cancer

Metastatic prostate cancer has travelled beyond the prostate to another part of the body. Doctors assess scans, prostate-specific antigen trends, symptoms, blood tests and tumour behaviour over time. Spread to bone, lymph nodes or organs can create different care needs, so one person's outlook cannot predict another's.

Treatment often aims to slow cancer, reduce symptoms and preserve strength. Hormone-blocking treatment may be combined with other systemic medicines, radiotherapy or targeted radioisotope therapy in suitable cases. Bone-strengthening therapy may help reduce skeletal complications when bone involvement is present.

Ask which areas are affected and what the treatment is designed to achieve. Discuss urinary symptoms, sexual health, fatigue, mood and bone health rather than waiting for them to become severe. Take medicines as prescribed and tell the team about supplements. A symptom diary can make changes easier to review at appointments.

Seek emergency care for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to pass urine, severe sudden back pain, or a fall with severe pain. These symptoms can signal spinal cord pressure, urinary blockage or a fracture and need rapid assessment.

Where has the cancer spread? What is the aim of the proposed treatment? How will hormone response and side effects be monitored? Do I need bone-strengthening therapy or radiotherapy for a painful area? Who should I call outside appointments?
