Prognosis when lung cancer has spread to the liver

Liver metastasis means lung cancer cells have formed deposits in the liver. The care team reviews scans, blood tests, symptoms and whether cancer is present in other organs. Liver function matters because it affects wellbeing and which medicines can be used safely. Tumour features may also point to targeted or immune-based treatment options.

The plan may focus on controlling cancer throughout the body, treating a particular liver area, and relieving symptoms. Chemotherapy, other systemic medicines, radiotherapy or specialist procedures may be considered according to the pattern of disease. Palliative care can support comfort alongside cancer treatment.

Request a clear explanation of the scan and liver blood-test results. Ask which treatment goal applies now and how it will be measured. Tell the team about alcohol use, supplements and every medicine, because the liver processes many treatments. Keep appointments for monitoring and report appetite, energy, abdominal discomfort or changes in skin colour.

Get urgent medical help for new confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting that prevents fluids, sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fever during cancer treatment, or yellow skin with worsening illness. Call the oncology team promptly if abdominal swelling, poor intake or pain is steadily increasing.

How much of the liver is involved, and is liver function affected? Which treatment is intended to control the whole cancer? Are genomic tumour profiling results available? What changes should trigger an urgent call, and how will scans and blood tests track response?
