Prognosis when lung cancer has spread to the brain

Brain metastases are areas where lung cancer cells have travelled to the brain. Doctors consider symptoms, scans, whether disease is present elsewhere, and molecular features of the tumour. Some people have one treatable area; others have several areas that need a broader plan. The outlook can change as scans show how the cancer responds.

Treatment may aim to control cancer, protect brain function and ease symptoms. Options can include medicines that reach cancer throughout the body, focused or whole-brain radiotherapy, and surgery in selected situations. Genomic tumour profiling may identify features that help guide treatment choices.

Ask the oncology team to explain the scan findings, tumour subtype and treatment goal in plain language. Keep a record of headaches, balance changes, weakness, vision problems and medicines. Discuss radiotherapy, systemic treatment and supportive care, including how side effects will be managed. A written plan can help coordinate oncology, neurology and palliative care.

Seek emergency help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden weakness or trouble speaking, severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, new confusion or difficulty staying awake. Contact the cancer team promptly for a new persistent headache, worsening balance, vision change or increasing weakness.
