What should you know about a professional TENS unit?

Short answer

A professional TENS unit uses controlled electrical pulses through skin electrodes to help manage some types of pain while you remain awake and involved in care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it provides
Electrical pulses delivered through skin electrodes
What you may feel
Tingling or tapping that should remain tolerable
Avoid
Broken skin, neck, head, chest and water

How TENS is used

The device sends small pulses between adhesive electrodes. People commonly feel tingling or tapping rather than a strong muscle contraction. A clinician can help choose settings, electrode positions and session timing based on the painful area, skin condition and treatment goal. TENS changes pain signalling for some people; it does not repair a fracture, remove an infection or identify the cause of pain.

A professional demonstration is useful when the painful area is difficult to reach or when you are unsure how to position the pads. Read the device instructions and use only compatible electrodes and leads.

Using it carefully

Check the skin before and after use, place pads on clean dry skin and turn the intensity down before removing them. Do not place electrodes over broken or infected skin, the front of the neck, the head or across the chest. Keep the unit off while driving, bathing or sleeping unless your clinician has given specific instructions.

Tell the clinician about implanted electrical devices, reduced sensation, pregnancy, epilepsy or unexplained skin problems before use. Stop if you develop burning, a rash, dizziness, palpitations or worsening pain, and seek advice about the next step.

When pain needs assessment

Seek medical care for new weakness, loss of feeling, fever, severe swelling, chest pain, breathing difficulty or pain after a significant injury. Do not use TENS to delay assessment of pain with a new neurological change or a wound that is becoming red and hot. Contact the prescriber if symptoms do not settle or the device causes skin injury.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether TENS fits your diagnosis, where pads may safely go, how long each session should last and what improvement to track. Confirm whether your medicines or implanted devices affect its use.

Questions people ask

Can TENS cure the source of pain?

No. It may help pain control for some people, but the underlying cause still needs appropriate assessment and treatment.

Can I remove the pads while the unit is on?

Turn the intensity down and switch the unit off before moving or removing electrodes to reduce sudden stimulation.
