Products for keratosis pilaris

Keratosis pilaris happens when keratin blocks hair follicles, creating small rough bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. The bumps may be skin-coloured or red and can feel worse when the skin is dry. Ingrown hairs and other causes of skin bumps can look similar, so a persistent or unusual pattern deserves an examination.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient after bathing, while the skin is still damp. A product containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may help smooth roughness; use it as directed and introduce it gradually. Avoid scrubbing gloves, picking, and very hot water, because friction can increase irritation and dark marks. A topical retinoid may be considered for some people, but it can irritate and is not suitable in every situation. Chemical peels or laser hair removal are not first-line solutions for every bump pattern.

See a dermatologist if bumps are painful, pus-filled, rapidly changing, very itchy, or leaving persistent marks, or if careful moisturising does not help. Seek prompt care for spreading warmth, swelling, fever, or a sudden blistering reaction after a product. Take the product packaging to the appointment if a reaction occurred.
