Products for alopecia areata: what to know

Alopecia areata is an immune-related condition that can cause sharply defined bald patches on the scalp, beard area, eyebrows, or other hair-bearing skin. Gentle fragrance-free cleanser, moisturiser for exposed skin, and sunscreen for bare scalp areas can reduce irritation and sun exposure. Hair fibres, scarves, and wigs can camouflage patches, but they do not stimulate follicles or alter the underlying process. Sudden bald patches are a presentation of alopecia areata, while bald patches can also have other causes, so diagnosis matters.

Use mild products and avoid tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing, vigorous brushing, and picking at the scalp. Check labels for ingredients that have irritated you before, and stop a product that causes burning, swelling, or a spreading rash. A dermatologist may discuss topical corticosteroids, steroid injection into the skin, oral corticosteroid treatment, or JAK inhibitor treatment according to the extent, location, duration, and activity of hair loss. Do not start prescription medicines or supplements without advice; some treatments need screening and monitoring.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for new, expanding, or recurrent patches, eyebrow or eyelash loss, scalp scaling, pain, redness, or broken hairs. Seek prompt care if hair loss is rapid, widespread, or accompanied by facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, or a severe medication reaction.
