What should you know about productive cough treatment?

Short answer
Productive cough treatment depends on its cause; fluids, rest and airway care may help while persistent or severe symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a productive cough can mean
Phlegm is mucus moved out of the airways by coughing. It can occur with a short-lived infection such as acute bronchitis, but ongoing phlegm may also relate to bronchiectasis, COPD or mucus draining from chronic sinusitis. Pneumonia is another possibility, especially when cough occurs with fever, breathlessness or chest pain. The colour of mucus alone does not establish the cause, and a clinician may listen to your chest, review your history and arrange further tests.
Ways to manage it
Drink regularly if you can do so safely, rest, avoid tobacco smoke and use humidified air only if it feels comfortable. Coughing helps clear mucus, so avoid suppressing a troublesome productive cough without advice. Follow any inhaler or airway-clearance plan you have been given. Antibiotic treatment is not appropriate for every productive cough; it may be considered when examination and the suspected cause support it. Never use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, sudden chest pain or difficulty staying awake. Arrange prompt assessment for fever with worsening cough, dehydration, wheezing, or a cough that is not settling. People with chronic lung disease, a weakened immune system or significant frailty should seek advice early because infection can worsen quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be causing the phlegm, whether you need a chest examination or imaging, how to clear mucus safely, and whether antibiotics or an inhaler have a clear role.

Questions people ask
Does green phlegm mean I need antibiotics?
Not necessarily. Mucus colour cannot by itself show whether antibiotics will help; the overall illness and examination guide treatment.
Should I stop coughing up phlegm?
Coughing can help clear mucus. Ask a clinician before using a cough suppressant when phlegm is difficult to clear.
